A flexible digital audio guide system

Nubart GUIDE is a progressive web-app (PWA) that is accessed via QR-code. It delivers engaging, self-guided museum tours: multilingual, multimedia, and accessible, with nothing for visitors to download or carry.

Choose the delivery method that fits your institution: unique, non-transferable QR cards for monetization, digital codes for integration with online ticketing, or a generic QR code for open and free access.

All options offer a smooth user experience directly on any smartphone, with rich content and effortless navigation.

Our guides are accessible and GDPR-compliant by design.

Museums and historical sites of any kind benefit from powerful built-in visitor feedback and usage insights, privacy-respecting and actionable.

An audio guide is an important additional service offered by your museum. However, only 15-30% of your visitors will want to use it. The production of an audio tour is expensive, so you might want to try to get some of that cost back. Or you might see your audio guides as a revenue stream for your institution.

If you make the same QR code available to everyone, you won't be able to monetize the audio guide because those links are public and can be shared.

At Nubart, we've patented a system called Lightweight Web Access Control. It lets us recognize the user's device anonymously. The legitimate owner of the audio guide card can access the content again whenever they want, but they can't share it with others. This makes your content more valuable, whether you decide to sell the cards separately or include them in the admission fee.

Although the QR-codes on Nubart's cards are non-transferable, they can be reused by their rightful owners at any time. This is important because being able to keep the card and reuse the audio guide is a big selling point for visitors and increases the take-up rate.

If you wish to waive the cards, we can provide the links or QRs online through our API. This way you can integrate them into your ticketing system.

How does it work?

Our QR codes are non-transferable...

Lightweight Web Access Control by Nubart - patented
  • Non-transferable: The first device can access the audio guide directly by scanning the QR code.
The QR code is unique and cannot be shared publicly.
Most visitors do not go any further.

...but reusable

Lightweight Web Access Control by Nubart - patented
  • Reusable: Visitors who wish to access the content again from a second device will require an access link via email. Once the link has been clicked, the second device will then inherit the access rights. The link can't be shared.
  • Visitors can still access the content as often as needed from any other device. The access link will always be sent to the previously provided email address. This email address cannot be changed.

At Nubart we care about the environment! You can choose the ecological material on which you want to print your cards:

  • High-strength special cardboard (recommended), FSC certified.
  • Recycled PVC.

Whatever material you choose, at Nubart we fully compensate for the CO2 emitted during the production of your order, including the transport of raw materials, the entire printing process, packaging and shipping to the destination. Click here to see the CO2 that we have offset so far.

Common concerns museums ask us

At Nubart, we are specialists in PWAs (QR audio guides) since 2016. The trend of moving away from traditional devices and native apps in favour of PWAs is growing. Nevertheless, we often receive queries related to this paradigm shift:

Yes! Nubart offers a true offline mode, ideal for historic sites, remote venues, or places with poor connectivity. Visitors only need internet once -at the start of their visit (e.g., entrance hall with Wi-Fi or mobile signal)- to scan the QR code and preload the complete audio guide (including images). After that, the guide works anywhere, even in flight mode or deep underground. That's why several Nubart clients, including caves with no internet at all, use our system successfully.

Scanning a QR code is now extremely simple: just open the camera, point, and tap. Since the pandemic, smartphone use among seniors has soared, as many adopted video calls to stay connected. QR codes also became a standard way to access digital menus and information, making everyone familiar with them. Before the pandemic, only 35% of Nubart users knew how to scan a QR code; now it's nearly 99%, even among older adults. Adoption keeps growing every year.

See How to improve the visitor experience with QR codes in museums

Because Nubart eliminates the burden of managing hundreds of audio devices, most venues enjoy huge cost and time savings. To support the rare visitor without a smartphone, we recommend keeping a few inexpensive mobile devices (e.g., basic Android models) on hand, just in case.

If you'd like, for a small fee Nubart can pre-configure these phones to run in kiosk mode, restricting usage to the audio guide and making them super simple for anyone to use.

If your site is very large and audio guide devices are essential, we can partner with another company to provide them. Just let us know.

This is rarely an issue. Today, most visitors carry their own earbuds or headphones. Even without them, audio guide tracks can be played quietly by holding the phone to the ear: Since audio guides consist of short tracks that are played individually rather than continuously, as an audiobook or music, this is not a major issue.

We simply recommend reminding visitors (on your website or ticketing) to bring their own earphones for the best experience.

What visitors say about Nubart's audio guides

User reviews

Palazzo Pepoli

Bologna, Italy

Wouldn't be able to do the exhibition without the audio guide! Thankful for the other language guides, so I could understand the history as a non Italian.

Albertina

Vienna, Austria

Exhibition Roy Lichtenstein

The format of the audio guide is ideal: mobile phone, own headphones, simple user guidance. Very well done, please use it for all exhibitions! My compliments!

Pravets

Bulgaria

Thanks for the great app! My family listened to the tapes again in the car while we were traveling - very interesting and well presented information.

National Museum of Slovenia

Ljublana, Slovenia

I really like that the audio tour is complementary and available through my own audio device. The inclusion of the visuals and the audio description is also very helpful. Lastly, I like that the descriptions are broken up into different sections based on topic. Everything seems very well thought out.

URMU

Blaubeuren, Germany

The audio guide is just great. Never before has a guide made me so enthusiastic and laugh so much. Really great. Also the interactive possibilities (for children) are great.

Danish Castle Center

Vordingbord, Denmark

I saw the exhibition at Vordingborg Borgcenter one month ago, and have only now heard the podcast. Which could be scanned onto the card I brought home. Super exciting, thank you very much.
